Lord Fitzgilbert

only I can sing my song

only I have seen the wrong

only I have seen the throng

of my people held in slavery

Lord Fitzgilbert came to stay

he married Aoife to improve his sway

he marched to Dublin and on the way

he ransacked all my monasteries

and the potato fell down rotten

all my children starved forgotten

two million survived of eight begotten

more died on the cruel seas

and my sons in the Easter rain

made a stand and set in train

events which ended the oppressive reign

and gave me back my dignity
